QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER
Issue 15 - April 2008
The Half-Term Party was a tremendous hit!
Our Half-Term Party was on 22 February at the Trinity Centre in Dalston. We all ate loads of (spicy!) Asian food, danced along with Potty Patrick, played with all sorts of new toys and chilled out in the Sensory Van. Nearly 150 of you showed up, making this the biggest party we've ever had!
Thanks to all of you for making it so much fun!
New Toys!
In response to the magnificent playing that went on at our half-term party, the Toy Library has lots of new toys, games and play resources to borrow! We now have a range of music CDs from around the world, new
puppets, musical instruments (including a guitar), a magic trick set, new switches and switch toys (including a bubble tube), new magnetic geomags, space
projectors, a marble run, jitter balls, voice changers, a carrom board, punching bag, art & craft supplies, pin-art sculptors, resources for sand and water play, a new wii game and playstation game, and of course the very popular plasma cars, which operate by steering alone.... to name but a few! So whether you are already a
member, or just curious to try out something new to play with, call Tess the Toy Library Worker at HFBU (Wednesdays and Thursdays) and come along to try out our new things.

Backup's Ofsted Inspection
We were inspected by Ofsted from the 18th-22nd of February. In their own words, Ofsted 'inspects and regulates to achieve excellence in the care of children and young people...'
Thanks to all the carers and parents who sent in
feedback forms on our behalf and who met with the inspector. The inspector has given us very positive feedback and we have just now seen the very positive report. Keep an eye out on the Ofsted website, as it will be published there for everyone to see!
Parent Training
Our Parent Training Program has wrapped up for this financial year and the feedback from parents who attended has been positive. We would like to thank all of you parents who came along. Watch this space for more information!
Coach Trips!
We'd like to share our great news - we now have funding for two coach trips to Thomley Hall this year! Thomley Hall is a specialist activity centre with loads of special equipment, a sensory room, a soft play room, art activities, and a large secured field with even more play equipment! Dates aren't set yet, so watch this space!

Join us at Hackney Families Together
Hackney Families Together is a group for
parents and carers of children 0-19 years old with disabilities and special educational needs. We meet monthly and cover key topics relevant to Hackney parent/carers. For more information give us a call!
- We meet at The Ann Taylor Centre
1-13 Triangle Road
( Off Westgate Street)
- The next meetings are May 8, June 12 and July 10th, 9:30-12:30
Carers: Please send us your care vouchers regularly! We can't manage our finances if we don't know what care is happening!
Increase in Carer's Allowance
The cost of care has increased! Each overnight is £61.50 and each hour for day care is £6.65. The budgets will look bigger in the 2008-2009 Placement Agreements, but the hours are the same. Now that the increase has been decided, we will start sending out the new contracts for signing. These are very important, so please send them back as soon as possible!
Card about Disability
Do people that you don't know struggle to
understand your child and his/her behaviour? We have printed out special cards that you can give to these people and hopefully this will
relieve some of the pressure off you, as well. If you would like some of these cards, please let us know and we'll send them out to you.
Front:
This child has disabilities which might cause him/her to:
- Become upset or aggressive
- Behaves in ways which might be unusual
- Shout or swear
This might be because s/he does not understand what is happening, is frightened or distressed, or cannot tell you what is upsetting him/her. We appreciate your patience and understanding.
