Annual General Meeting
And Storytelling Session

Monday 27th November
at The Vortex Jazz Club, Gillet Street, N16
5-6.30pm

Happy Children The AGM is the chance to ensure that you, our families and carers, know that we are running HFBU properly, spending the money wisely and providing services which parents and children value. It's also a chance for you to meet staff, members of our council of management, and other parents, volunteers and carers. We will provide a crèche, staffed by experienced playworkers, and buffet refreshments for everyone.

We will also be giving the results of our great COMPETITION (see below), with prizes for the children.

This year our speaker is Jackie Leppert, a very experienced special needs teacher who used to work in Islington but is now based in the South East. Jackie will talk about SENSORY STORIES and give a demonstration of a storytelling session, which we hope the children will enjoy.

We're looking forward to seeing you all there!

Parents Needed!

For our Council of Management: the committee NEEDS a parent to represent parents' interests and help HFBU continue to provide appropriate services. Full training will be given. For an informal chat about what's involved, please call Sheila at HFBU (020 7275 0088).

Children's Poetry Competition

Remember last year's painting competition? This was such a success that we have decided to hold another competition for all the children (including brothers & sisters and volunteers' and carers' children.) What we want you to do is produce a piece of work on the subject of YOUR NAME. It can be a rhyme, a limerick, a rap, a picture, anything you like; it can be written, taped, drawn, painted, performed.... Prizes will be awarded at the AGM to all entries. Please can you get all entries to HFBU by 22nd November.

Parents' Group

The Parents' Group which meets at the Huddleston Centre reconvened after the Summer break on Thursday 12th October. The group is for all parents of disabled children and provides a forum to meet other parents and professionals, exchange ideas and help to shape the future of services for disabled children in Hackney. The Group meets monthly on a Thursday morning 10-12.30, the next dates are 9th November and 7th December. Please call HFBU on 020 7275 0088 for more information.

Family Group
The new family groups for children aged 5-12 who are considered to have challenging behaviour and their parents kicked off in September. This is something which came about from comments YOU made after our picnic last year. The first session was both relaxed and lively, with 9 children enjoying a range of activities, ably supported by our lovely new playworkers and 8 parents able to meet, relax and discuss what they wanted from the group. The group meets one Saturday afternoon per month from 1.30-4pm. Please call us on 020 7275 0088 if you would like to come.

Disabled Symbol
Blue Badge

As from 29th September there are new regulations governing Blue Badge use; the primary difference is that police officers, traffic wardens etc have the right to inspect your Blue Badge. Misuse of a badge (eg, if you let friends borrow it, or if it is used when the disabled person is not present, including times when you might be doing shopping for that person) can result in a fine of up to £1000.

Cook and Eat Sessions
Thursdays 12-3pm for 6 weeks
From 26th October at the Huddleston Centre

SureStart Hackney Downs are running this great new scheme; come along to a cooking demo followed by fun sessions where you can watch a chef in action, learn how to handle fussy eaters, cook & eat with other parents, discover new recipes. To reserve a place call Katie on 020 8985 6643.

Marksfield Secret Garden

Markfield Project users and local people are teaming up to transform the park. They want to create a haven for wildlife that local people can be proud of! Watch Alex Hendra, our previous director, go head to head with another project in the Big Lottery Fund People's Millions programme. With your vote they can make the dream come true. ITV 1, Monday 13 November, 6:30pm

Summer Picnic!
Child in wheelchair

Children in the sensory bus

Despite miserable weather forecasts and nasty big clouds, we took a deep breath, crossed our fingers and went ahead with our summer picnic in Springfield Park - and had a brilliant time! The rain held off and over 70 people came, many of them bringing a variety of tasty and delicious food. As well as eating ourselves silly, we also had a lively game of football, face-painting and best of all, the sensory bus. This was great, and the photo doesn't really do justice to the magical lights, colours and sparkles inside. We are already looking forward to the next party - we love them!
